How SnapShrink handles your photos, your permissions and your data — in the app and on this site.
The short version
- Your photos stay on your device. Compressing, cropping and converting all happen locally. We never receive, see, upload or store your images.
- There is no account. We do not ask for your name, email address or phone number, and we do not have a user database.
- We do not use analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. The app ships without them.
- The app shows ads. Google AdMob is the only third-party service in the app, and it is the only thing that collects data about your device. You can limit or reset what it uses — section 5 explains how.
1. Who this policy is from
SnapShrink ("the app", "we", "us") is an independently developed image-compression app published on Google Play as com.xda.snapshrink. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. Questions, requests and complaints can go to the address in section 14.
2. Your photos and files
This is the part most people are here for, so it is first and it is unambiguous.
- Images are processed entirely on your device. When you compress, crop, rotate or convert a picture, the app reads the file from your device, works on it using the image libraries built into Android and iOS, and writes the result back to your device.
- No image is ever transmitted to us or to anyone else. The app has no photo upload, no cloud processing queue and no server-side image pipeline. There is no server that could receive your photos. This is why compression keeps working with your phone in airplane mode — try it.
- We do not keep copies. Originals are left exactly as they were; the app never deletes or overwrites your source photo. Compressed results are written where you choose to save them, and intermediate working files live in the app's own private temporary folder, which the operating system clears.
- When you share a result, you are sharing it. Tapping share hands the file to your device's own share sheet, and whatever app you pick from there — a messenger, mail client, cloud drive — handles it under its own privacy policy, not ours.
- Metadata is kept, not stripped. SnapShrink deliberately preserves the EXIF metadata that came with your photo: camera model, timestamps, the orientation flag so the picture is not saved sideways, and GPS coordinates, if your camera recorded them. We keep it because losing the date and place a photo was taken is usually worse than losing a few more kilobytes. None of it is ever sent to us or to anyone else — it stays inside the file, on your device. It does travel with the file if you share it, though, so if what you need is a photo with its location removed, use a tool built for that. Compressing it here will not do it for you.
3. Device permissions
The app asks for the minimum it can function with, at the moment it needs it, and it explains why before the system prompt appears.
- Photo library (choosing images). Selecting photos goes through the system photo picker provided by Android and iOS. That picker runs outside the app and hands back only the specific files you tap. The app therefore does not need — and does not request — blanket access to your whole library in order to pick images.
- Camera. Requested only if you choose to take a new photo inside the app. Declining it leaves every other feature working. The app does not record video or audio.
- Saving to your photo library. Requested only when you save a compressed result to your gallery or camera roll, which on iOS is add-only access.
- Internet access. Used to load advertisements and nothing else. No image data travels over it.
- Tracking (iOS only). iOS may show you Apple's "Allow app to track your activity" prompt. It governs whether advertising can use your device's advertising identifier. Choosing "Ask App Not to Track" is honoured by the system, and the app works identically either way.
If you decline a permission and later change your mind, the app points you at the right page in your system settings. You can revoke any permission there at any time.
4. What the app itself collects
Nothing that identifies you. The app has no account system, no login, no analytics SDK and no crash-reporting SDK. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, location, browsing history or the content of your photos, and we do not build a profile of you.
A small amount of information is stored on your device only, never sent anywhere: your chosen compression settings, and a count of how many images you have compressed, which is used solely to decide when to show the "enjoying the app?" rating prompt. Deleting the app deletes both.
5. Advertising
SnapShrink is free and paid for by advertising. We use Google AdMob (Google LLC) to show banner ads, and an optional rewarded video ad you can choose to watch to unlock bulk compression. Nothing in the app is gated behind a purchase.
AdMob is a third party and collects information about your device directly, under its own privacy policy rather than ours. Typically that includes your device's advertising identifier (the Android advertising ID or, on iOS, the IDFA where you have permitted it), IP address, device model and operating system version, coarse location derived from your IP address, and interactions with the ads shown — impressions and taps. We receive only aggregate, anonymous performance totals, such as how many impressions were served. We never receive your identifiers, and we cannot connect ad data to a person.
Google's handling of this data is described in Google's Privacy Policy and in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
Your choices about ads
- Android: Settings → Google → All services → Ads, where you can delete your advertising ID outright or opt out of ad personalisation.
- iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, where you can turn off "Allow Apps to Request to Track" for every app at once, or revoke SnapShrink specifically.
- EEA, UK and Switzerland: where required, the app presents a Google-certified consent message before personalised ads are served, and you can change or withdraw that choice at any time from the app's settings. Withdrawing consent means you still see ads, but non-personalised ones.
6. Ratings and store links
After you have compressed a number of images the app may ask whether you would like to rate it, using Apple's and Google's own in-app review mechanisms. The prompt is rendered and handled by the store, not by us; we are not told whether you reviewed the app or what you said, and we only receive the public review that any visitor to the store listing can read. Declining stops the asking.
7. This website
snapshrink.app is a static site. It has no login, no comment form, no analytics or tracking scripts, and it sets no cookies. Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server access logs — IP address, timestamp, requested page, user agent — for security and troubleshooting, as any web host does. Web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser contacts Google's servers to fetch them; Google states that it does not use Google Fonts requests to build advertising profiles. Links out to Google Play and the App Store take you to pages governed by Google's and Apple's policies.
8. Children
SnapShrink is a general-audience utility and is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The app contains no social features, no user-generated content shared with others, and no in-app purchases. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, contact us and we will act on it.
9. How long information is kept
We hold no personal information about you, so there is nothing for us to retain or delete. Your settings and compression count live on your device until you clear the app's data or uninstall it. Data held by Google AdMob is retained according to Google's own retention schedules, which you can review in the Google policies linked in section 5.
10. Sharing and selling data
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, because we do not have it. We do not transfer data to any third party other than the advertising service described in section 5, which collects it directly from your device. We would disclose information only if legally compelled to, and we have no image or user data to disclose in the first place.
11. Security
Keeping your photos on your own device removes the single biggest privacy risk an image app can carry: there is no server holding your pictures to be breached, and no transfer to intercept. Within the app, working files are kept in the private storage sandbox that Android and iOS give each app, which other apps cannot read. Please keep your device's operating system up to date and install the app only from Google Play or the App Store.
12. Your rights
Depending on where you live — for example under the GDPR in the EEA, the UK GDPR, or the CCPA/CPRA in California — you have rights to access, correct, delete and port your personal information, to object to or restrict its processing, to opt out of its sale or sharing, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.
We will honour any such request, with one honest caveat: because we do not collect personal information, we will usually have nothing to produce or erase. Where our lawful basis matters, serving non-personalised ads rests on our legitimate interest in funding a free app; personalised ads rest on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. For information held by Google as an advertising provider, use the controls in section 5 or contact Google directly. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
13. Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects your privacy, this page is updated and the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes on the store listing. The current version always lives at snapshrink.app/privacy.
